Sleep apnea pada bayi prematur — atau disebut apnea of prematurity — is a common condition that requires immediate medical attention. Unlike sleep apnea in adults, this condition relates to the immaturity of the respiratory system in babies born before term.
What Is Sleep Apnea in Premature Babies?
Apnea of prematurity occurs when a baby born before 37 weeks of gestation experiences breathing pauses of 15–20 seconds or more. The immature central nervous system means the brain is not yet able to send consistent breathing signals.
Symptoms to Watch For
Signs of sleep apnea in premature babies include:

- Slowed heart rate (bradikardia)
- Decreased blood oxygen levels (desaturasi)
- Bluish discoloration of the skin, lips, or tongue (sianosis)
If the baby has breathing pauses accompanied by a drop in heart rate or oxygen, immediate medical examination is required.
Main Causes
This condition occurs mainly because of an immature nervous and respiratory system. Other triggering factors include: infection (sepsis), other breathing disorders, stomach reflux into the esophagus, imbalances in sugar or calcium levels, heart or blood-vessel disorders, and an overly flexed neck position.
Diagnosis and Monitoring
Premature babies are cared for and closely monitored in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Doctors use specialized monitoring equipment that continuously tracks breathing patterns, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels, with alarms that activate when anomalies occur.

Treatment
Treatment is tailored to the cause and severity:
- Gentle stimulation: Touch or physical stimulation to restart breathing
- Medication: Caffeine citrate is the most commonly used stimulant medication to stimulate the breathing center in the brain
- Breathing support: CPAP or a ventilator is used in more severe cases
- Treating the underlying cause: Addressing the underlying infection, reflux, or electrolyte imbalance
Most premature babies will outgrow this condition as their nervous system matures, usually at a corrected gestational age of 36–44 weeks.
