How Sleep Apnea Affects Your Breathing

Sleep apnea happens when the airway becomes blocked during sleep. As muscles relax, the tongue and soft palate can collapse into the throat, stopping airflow for several seconds.

The soft palate relaxes during sleep and can vibrate (snoring) or close off the airway.

The base of the tongue can fall back and block the airway during sleep.

Here the airway narrows or collapses, briefly stopping airflow (apnea).

The lower airway (trachea) carries air from the throat down to the lungs.

Nasal passage — the main route for airflow. A blocked nose can worsen sleep apnea.

Blood oxygen drops each time breathing pauses, straining the heart and brain.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We want sleep healthcare to be accessible to everyone. We partner with a range of insurance providers, including private insurers. If you are unsure whether your policy covers a sleep apnea assessment, contact us and we will gladly help verify it.

We recommend an initial consultation to discuss your symptoms. From there, our medical team will recommend whether you need a sleep study (in-clinic or at home), CPAP therapy, or another treatment option — all tailored to your condition.

We understand that sleep disorders can't wait. Our team does its best to accommodate same-day appointments when available. Contact us via WhatsApp or phone for current availability.

Your first visit begins with a discussion of your sleep history and concerns. We then explain the available assessment options — from an in-clinic sleep study to an at-home sleep test — and together decide the best next step for you.
