Congratulations on starting your CPAP therapy! However, there is one important step that is often overlooked: properly caring for your CPAP mask. The mask comes into direct contact with your face and airway every night. Without proper maintenance, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi that may harm your health.

Why Is CPAP Mask Care Essential?

Without regular cleaning:

  • Bacteria and fungi multiply on moist surfaces
  • Unpleasant odors interfere with therapy comfort
  • Skin irritation and breakouts appear in the mask contact area
  • The silicone material deteriorates and develops leaks more quickly
  • The mask's sealing performance declines

Simply put: a dirty mask means ineffective therapy.

Daily Care (Every Morning)

1. Remove the mask from the headgear and CPAP tubing

2. Wash with warm water and mild baby soap

3. Gently scrub with your fingers or a soft cloth

4. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is gone

5. Air dry by hanging or placing on a clean towel — away from direct sunlight

Weekly Care

6. Soak all components in a solution of warm water and mild soap for 30 minutes

7. Clean and rinse thoroughly

8. Also clean the CPAP tubing: run soapy water through it, swirl, rinse, then hang to dry

9. Clean the humidifier with warm water and diluted white vinegar (1:3 ratio)

What to Avoid

  • Bleach, high-concentration alcohol, or harsh chemical products
  • Dishwashers (high heat damages silicone)
  • Direct sunlight for drying
  • Facial oils or lotions on the mask contact area before sleeping

Signs That Your Mask Needs to Be Replaced

  • Cracks or tears in the silicone cushion
  • Mask leaks even after readjustment
  • Unpleasant odor persists even after washing
  • Silicone has turned yellowish or hardened
  • Skin irritation continues to occur

Mask cushions should be replaced every 1–3 months, and the full mask every 6–12 months.
